What would Chris tell his younger self?
- If I could go back, I'd tell younger me that you'll do some pretty great things but don't need to be great. All you have to do is be yourself, and that will always be enough.
- Confidence is just truth, it's just being honest.
The pursuit is greater than the prize
The journey of pursuing your goals often brings greater fulfillment than the moment of achievement itself. This is because, along the way, you discover what you're truly capable of.
Those boring, normal victories contribute to the really impressive ones.
Embracing the high and the low of your life
- There are no good emotions or bad emotions; they're just feelings.
- Don't stress in the face of adversity; make adversity something you desire for an opportunity to grow.
- It's okay to feel stress in adversity; what matters is where the stress leads you.
- The adversity could bring you beyond the levels you know you're capable of.
What is your definition of success?
- Understanding the big picture, what your long-term goal is, and also knowing that if you keep driving forward and never quit, you will succeed in the end.
- Everything changed for me when I realized that we're not meant to feel excited and perfect all the time. I started to accept that where I am right now is where I genuinely meant to be. Tough days are all a part of a process; lean into them. Bad days are also part of a very good and meaningful life, so on my toughest days, I think about getting through one more day, one more workout, one more rep.
- Ben Bergeron in Chasing Excellence: lean into discomfort as if you invited it through the door.
- You are in control of the frame.
Learning to say NO more
- Being able to stick true and checking in with yourself, and being like: who am I? What do I care about? What's truly authentic to yourself, one of you working towards something you care about rather than things you think other people care about?
- No one ever gets credit for saying no to something people don't know about.
